Selangor dare to dream big

SELANGOR have big dreams for the new season.

The Red Giants, whose last domestic title was the 2015 Malaysia Cup, have set their sights on qualifying for either the 2021 AFC Champions League or the AFC Cup.

And for that to happen, Selangor will have to win the Super League or the FA Cup next season.

FA of Selangor (FAS) secretary-general Dr Johan Kamal Hamidon said: “The target next season is to make an impact and qualify for one of the Asian-level club competitions in 2021.

“Selangor are aiming to become one of the big clubs in Asia. We have big dreams and we will work towards achieving them.”

The six new signings are Nor Hakim Hassan, Safuwan Baharudin, Nicholas Swirad, Brendan Gan, Rodney Celvin and Tauffiq Ar Rasyid.

Last season, Selangor did commendably under B. Satiananthan by finishing third in the Super League and reaching the Malaysia Cup semi-finals.

The 33-time Malaysia Cup champions will play in the inaugural Asia Cup Challenge on Jan 18-19 as a warm-up for the new season, which starts on Feb 28.

Selangor have invited Vietnam's Hanoi FC, Indonesia's Persib Bandung and Thailand's Bangkok United for the four-team Asia Cup, which offers US$10,000 (RM41,000) in prize money.

Satiananthan, meanwhile, described the target set by FAS to qualify for the 2021 Asian-level club competitions as realistic.

“I have accepted this challenge and will do my best to achieve it,” he said.
