Selangor will not play hardball over release of players

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor will release their players for Malaysia's Under-23 Asian Cup campaign.

Selangor chief operating officer Aladdin Mostafa said Selangor consider it a national service to release players for international assignments.

Juan Torres Garriaf's side might face challenges securing the best players, as the Under-23 Asian Cup will be held outside the FIFA window on April 15-May 3.

"The management had a discussion with coach Tan Cheng Hoe, and he has no issues," said Aladdin.

"Selangor have many players in the national Under-23 team, so the club have to be supportive."

Selangor had eight players in the Under-23 team during last year's qualifiers.

They were Syahmi Adib Haikal Shukri, Mukhairi Ajmal Mahadi, V. Ruventhiran, Zikri Khalili, Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar, Syahir Bashah, Aliff Izwan Yuslan and Abu Khalil.

National Under-23 team manager Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar, also the Selangor FA deputy president, voiced his concern recently about not securing the release of players for the competition.

Malaysia are in Group D with Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Kuwait at the Under-23 Asian Cup.

The top three teams will secure Paris Olympic berths, while the fourth-placed team will be involved in the intercontinental playoff.
