Maloney wants his boys fit for AFC Championship

National Under-19 coach Brad Maloney has back-up plans, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, to prepare his team for the AFC Championship in October.

The Australian is determined to work around the suspension of all football activities to get his players ready for the tournament.

"We cannot assemble a team yet for centralised training. However, we have back-up plans.

"We were invited for several tournaments but most have been cancelled due to the Covid-19 crisis.

"I have been communicating with my staff and the FA of Malaysia (FAM) regarding the team's preparation for the tournament. We have several alternatives," said Maloney.

The AFC Championship is scheduled on Oct 14-31 in Uzbekistan. Malaysia made the cut after winning the qualifying round (Group G) in Phnom Penh last year.

For the draw, Malaysia are in Pot Three with five-time champions Iraq, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Maloney will use the same set of players who played in the qualifiers last year as he is unable to scout for options due to the suspension of youth tournaments in the country.

For the record, Malaysia finished third on three occasions (1959, 1960 and 1968) in the AFC Championship.
