A football team 'owner' whose job is not safe

KUALA LUMPUR: Sulaiman Hussin may be "the owner and director of UKM FC" but that doesn't mean his job as their team's coach is safe.

This was stated by team manager Fairus Shafie who is one of the four directors of Varsity Boys Sdn Bhd, the owner of UKM FC.

Sulaiman has found himself as "owner" of UKM FC when the team made changes to meet the requirements under FAM's team privatisation process for the M-League.

Fairus said whatever Sulaiman's position is following the "privatisation process", he still has not met his key performance index (KPI) — which is to see UKM FC qualify for the Malaysia Cup which starts middle of this month.

The university side are currently 10th in the table with only nine points following a result of two wins in their last 10 games. And this is not good enough for UKM FC to qualify for the Malaysia Cup.

"There are no issues with Sulaiman being named as a director. We have a board of directors and there are others who can make decisions.

"I cannot guarantee (Sulaiman will coach UKM FC next year) because he has his KPI for this season. If he succeeds, he can (keep his coaching job) continue but if the team don't qualify for the Malaysia Cup, we'll see what happens."

Fairus revealed that due to UKM FC's financial constraints, they intend to have a team of only university students for next season.

UKM FC were issued a conditional national licence by FAM for next season after it was found that they have not made EPF contributions for their players for two months and also owe the Inland Revenue Board.

"We are still looking for main sponsors. The (Education) Ministry will give us some help but we have to add to it.

"If we use students all our players, we can save money. Maybe we keep the import signings to a minimum which is two players and not four."
