Vietnam's psychological warfare

VIETNAM coach Park Hang Seo is a confident man.

The South Korean is so sure that Vietnam will not lose to Harimau Malaya on June 11 in a World Cup qualifier that he is ready to resign if the Golden Star Warriors fail in their mission to collect three points from the match.

Vietnam, who are top of Group G with 11 points, resume their qualifying campaign against Indonesia in Dubai today.

Hang Seo has a reason to be confident as his team have recorded three wins and a draw in four meetings against Tan Cheng Hoe's side since 2018.

Although Cheng Hoe did not accuse Hang Seo of trying to wage a psychological war on Harimau Malaya, he calmly said his team will be at their best to face Vietnam.

Cheng Hoe will be on a spying mission today as he will be at the Zabeel Stadium in Dubai to watch Vietnam play Indonesia.

"As a coach, I need to prepare the team accordingly. Against UAE, we did not defend and attack effectively as a team, but we will be a much-improved side when we play Vietnam," said Cheng Hoe yesterday.

"I did analyse each player in our team and opponent before coming to Dubai, so I know what to do.

"The Korean coach is playing a psychological game. I do not want to comment anything as I prefer to focus on Harimau Malaya rather than the Golden Star Warriors."

However, Cheng Hoe did hit back at Hang Seo, but in a soft and gentle manner, yesterday.

"We have watched Vietnam in action many times, and they always play the same pattern. Their game plan never changes, even if they are without a few regulars.

"We coaches normally plan ahead. We find solutions on how to play against each and every opponent. Vietnam's pattern of play never changes, and we have prepared accordingly.

"Although I have never guided Harimau Malaya to victory against Vietnam since I got the job, I do not feel any pressure here.

"It is a challenge for me. Every coach wants positive results. I may not have a good record against Vietnam, but it does not mean they are unbeatable.

"The target is to get a good result on June 11."

Cheng Hoe believes he has solutions to counter Vietnam's style of play.

"They are a strong defensive unit. However, I have solutions to work around their game for a favourable result."

The coach also hopes Indonesia will pull off a surprise when they play Vietnam today.

Following the 4-0 defeat to the UAE last week, Malaysia need favours from their regional rivals to either top or finish second in Group G.

UAE, Thailand and Malaysia have nine points each, but the latter is fourth on goal difference.

"Yes, I hope Indonesia will be able to record a positive result tomorrow as it will indirectly motivate my players when they play Vietnam."

Cheng Hoe added that his players have overcome the disappointment of the UAE defeat and are now busy preparing for the Vietnam match.

"I have not decided on the lineup yet. We will see how it goes in training.

"Everyone in the team is in contention to play against Vietnam. People may have their opinions about players, but I have analysed their strengths and will use them accordingly to fit my tactics.

"The players, except for defender Junior Eldstal, are fit. Eldstal has a bad injury, and our medical team are looking at it."
