Cup of redemption for Red Giants

Selangor used to be the most feared team in Malaysian football. However, the Red Giants are now struggling to find their footing in the M-League, with the 2015 Malaysia Cup success being their last title.

Many thought Selangor would rise in this season's Super League after adopting German philosophy into their game.

But Selangor were a disappointment as weak foreign signings and a string of inconsistent performances saw them finishing fifth in the league.

Selangor, however, hope to make amends in the Malaysia Cup, which starts on Sept 25.

The Red Giants are the most successful team in the Malaysia Cup, regarded as the most prestigious tournament in the country, with 33 wins.

This year, Selangor are in Group B of the competition with contenders Terengganu, Perak and the third-placed Premier League team.

Going by record, Karsten Neitzel's side and the Turtles should advance to the quarter-finals from the group.

How far they go in the Malaysia Cup will highly depend on striker Ifedayo Omosuyi, who emerged as the Golden Boot winner in the Super League.

The Nigerian-born scored 26 out of the 45 goals recorded by Selangor in the league.

Defending champions Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) are the favourites, while Super League runners-up Kedah, Penang and Terengganu are among the contenders.

The star-studded JDT, who defeated Kedah 3-0 in the 2019 final, are eager to retain their Malaysia Cup crown after winning the Super League for the eighth straight year.

JDT's run in the Malaysia Cup will depend on their mood and desire. Nothing will stop them from bulldozing their opponents if they put their hearts on the mission.

However, the boredom of dominating Malaysian football for far too long could become their weakness, and Selangor could take advantage of it to end their six-year title drought in Malaysian football.

But then again, the Red Giants will have other contenders in the competition.

Selangor team manager Mahfizul Rusydin Rashid admitted that his team were inconsistent in the Super League.

"The target for the team is one title this year, so they need to win the Malaysia Cup to achieve it," said Mahfizul.

"However, it will not be an easy mission. The players will have to focus on every game and collect points to reach the quarter-finals first."

Mahfizul considers Selangor as underdogs to win Group B.

"Terengganu are the group favourites, while Perak will want to make amends after their poor Super League outing.

"I think it is an open group as any two teams can qualify for the quarter-finals," he added.
