100-year party on hold

The Malaysia Cup is 100 years old and deserves a grand celebration. But Covid-19 restrictions are putting the centenary party on hold.

The centenary celebration of the nation's oldest football competition may be delayed or even called off.

The Malaysia Cup competition, which was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, will kick off this Sunday.

Inaugurated in 1920, the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Malaysia Cup was supposed to include a road tour in every state where the matches are being played.

This is to enable fans to share in the competition's rich history at the sponsors' booths in cities nation-wide.

However, the Malaysian Football League (MFL) are still waiting for the green light from the government to allow fans to return to the stadia even as the Malaysia Cup is about to kick off.

MFL expect to hear a decision from the National Security Council (NSC) tomorrow on fans' return.

"There has been no decision about the fans yet. They had a meeting, but I am not too sure if the matter was discussed," said MFL president Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan yesterday.

While only fully vaccinated fans will be allowed into stadiums, the Malaysia Cup road show and other centenary events that MFL have planned for, could be scrapped if fans are not allowed into stadia.

Previously, teams were allowed to admit fans into their home stadium at 25 per cent capacity or 8,000 spectators, whichever is less.
