Cheng Hoe wakes up the Red Giants

KUALA LUMPUR: The Red Giants have been sleeping this season, their form comatose; that was until Tan Cheng Hoe's arrival last month.

The former national coach might have awaken a sleeping giant as Selangor got up and clobbered Melaka 5-0 last week, and on Friday, beat Petaling Jaya City 1-0.

The awakening of Selangor is just in time as they turn towards the Malaysia Cup.

As Selangor climbed up to seventh in the Super League table, overtaking Sri Pahang, it is clear that Cheng Hoe has transformed the struggling team.

A Selangor player who got his break under Cheng Hoe and who scored the winner aganist PJ City was Danial Asri.

The 22-year-old, who scored his first ever goal for Selangor this season yesterday, said: "I came in for the main striker (Herlison Caion) in the 72nd minute. The coach believed in me and I was glad I repaid that trust."

Danial said it has been close to a year since he last scored a goal for Selangor. In last year's Malaysia Cup, he scored three goals for Selangor in the group stage.

Cheng Hoe said: "I always give chances to the youngsters, and Danial is a good goal poacher.

"He scored today (on Friday). He has been working hard during training to fight for his spot on the team."
