Malaysia finish fourth in Asean Under-23

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia lost 4-3 to Thailand on penalties and finished fourth at the Asean Under-23 football championship in Rayong, Thailand, today.

The match had ended scoreless in regulation time with Malaysia taking a total of six shots on goal compared to Thailand's 13 attempts.

Malaysia's Fergus Tierney, Aliff Izwan Yuslan and Ruventhiran converted their spot kicks in the shootout. But Syahir Bashah and Abu Khalil Abu Khalil's attempts were blocked by Thailand goalkeeper Thirawooth Sraunson.

Malaysian goalkeeper Azim Al Almin was unable to stop the shots from Thailand's Thanison Paibulkijcharoen, Pattara Soimalai, Songchai Thongcham and Chukid Wanpraphao. Thakdanai Jaihan was the only Thai to miss the mark.

Malaysia's best result in the tournament was also fourth in 2005.
