Will Pan Gon stay or go?

KUALA LUMPUR: Will South Korean Kim Pan Gon continue as Malaysia's national team head coach?

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) can't give you a definite answer on the matter today and say they are still discussing it.

Pan Gon signed with FAM in January last year on a two-year plus one year contract.

His contract will expire at the end of next month, and there will be a one-year extension (2024) if both parties are agreeable. However, it is learnt that Pan Gon needs to inform FAM six months before the end of their two-year contract if he wishes to continue. So far, he hasn't done so.

When asked about the matter, FAM secretary general Datuk Noor Azman Rahman said they will discuss Pan Gon's contract with the National Team Committee soon.

He said Pan Gon had already drafted the plan for the national team in the build-up to the Asian Cup in Doha in January next year.

"We will expand on the matter (Pan Gon's contract) later. The matter will be brought up at the National Team Committee meeting.

"It's not that he didn't sign. There have been discussions but give it time, let him settle the 2026 World Cup/2027 Asian Cup qualification first. Pan Gon has already drafted a programme until next year."

Under Pan Gon, the national team climbed to a high of World No. 134 last month before slipping to 137th.

Pan Gon's immediate task is to guide Harimau Malaya at the 2026 World Cup/2027 Asian Cup qualifiers where they are drawn in Group D with Oman, Kyrgyzstan and Taiwan.

For next year's Asian Cup from Jan 15-25, Malaysia are drawn in Group E with South Korea, Jordan and Bahrain.
