FAM chief will reply on the RM35m given to FAM by Fifa on Tuesday

KUALA LUMPUR: Following claims that the FA of Malaysia (FAM) is already cash rich and does not need government's support due to strong funding from Fifa, the national body is likely to respond to the issue on Tuesday.

FAM president Datuk Hamidin Amin is expected to issue a statement.

Earlier former FAM treasurer Tan Sri Mohamad Noor Abdul Rahim said the cash-rich national body should not get funding from the government.

It was reported that FAM received around US$7.6 million (RM35 million) through Fifa's Forward Development Programme from 2016 to 2022. This comes after the world body released its Fifa Forward Programme report.

Fifa, which is expected to earn US$11 billion from 2023 to 2026, had said that under its Fifa Forward 3.0 programme, each member association would receive approximately US$8 million over four years.

When asked about the matter, FAM secretary general Datuk Noor Azman Rahman said: "Hamidin will enlighten media members on Tuesday."

Tuesday will also see several events, including Hamidin's birthday celebration, "doa selamat" recital for Harimau Malaya and their first day of training for next month's Asian Cup in Qatar.

With the Fifa windfall, Noor, who served as FAM treasurer from 2006-2010, feels that FAM is in a good financial position, and they don't need assistance from the government.

Noor said the smaller national sports associations need government's funding more than FAM.
