Faisal far ahead of Heung Min in race for Asian Cup award

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian footballer Faisal Halim has shot into the lead, even ahead of South Korean superstar Son Heung Min, in the voting for the Asian Cup goal of the tournament.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is letting fans pick the best goal of the recent Asian Cup in Doha, Qatar.

At the quadrennial continental showpiece, diminutive winger Faisal scored a brilliant goal that captured the imagination of many against South Korea.

On receiving the ball from Darren Lok, Faisal bamboozled Bayern Munich centreback Kim Min Jae, rated as one of the best defenders in the world, and goalkeeper Jo Hyeon Woo with his jinking runs before scoring.

Faisal's fantastic goal helped Malaysia hold mighty Taegeuk Warriors to a 3-3 draw.

As of today, Faisal has received 63 per cent of the votes so far, well ahead of Japan's Keito Nakamura, Qatar's Hassan Al Haydos, Thailand's Supachok Sarachat (Thailand), Jordan's Mousa Al Tamari, Saudi Arabia's Abdulrahman Ghareeb, Heung Min and Iran's Sardar Azmoun.

Trailing Faisal is Al Tamari (25%), Heung Min (6%), Azmoun (4%) and Supachok (1%).

Voting is still open and fans can do so at the-afc.com.
