Honda, Polking and Segrt among names on Selangor shortlist

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor have started the search for Tan Cheng Hoe's successor after his exit.

Will the Red Giants go for a big hitter, a safe pair of hands or an up-and-coming coach as their next boss?

Cheng Hoe surprised everyone by leaving the Red Giants a few days ago to join Police Tero, who are currently battling relegation in the Thai League.

While Selangor have remained tight-lipped, several coaches have been linked to the hot seat.

Notable names in consideration include Croatian Bojan Hodak, Japan's Keisuke Honda, former Thailand coach Alexandre Polking, former Tajikistan coach Petar Segrt, and former Vietnam coach Park Hang Seo.

Although Hodak, with his experience in coaching several M-League teams, seems like a viable candidate, Selangor may hold a different perspective.

Currently with Indonesia's Persib Bandung, Hodak's impact is evident as the club, previously in the Liga 1 relegation zone, have now risen to second place in the standings.

Selangor assistant coach Nidzam Jamil is overseeing coaching duties on an interim basis.

However, Nidzam, aged 44, might be considered for the position if Selangor fail to identify a suitable candidate before the upcoming season in May.

It has been reported that Selangor have interviewed four foreign coaches for the job.

Selangor CEO Dr Johan Kamal Hamidon revealed that Nidzam is the sole local coach being considered, dismissing the possibility of Kedah coach Nafuzi or Sabah coach Ong Kim Swee joining the club.

"Nidzam is the only local coach on our list for the job. There are foreign candidates whom we are still evaluating.

"We seek a coach who understands Cheng Hoe's philosophy. Our former coach executed his job well," said Johan.
