Sukree urges corporate sponsors to invest in golf

KUALA LUMPUR: Eight-time PGM Tour champion Sukree Othman has revealed that many professional golfers are quitting as they do not make enough money from the sport.

It is understood that golfers rely on corporate sponsors to cover all expenses from participation fees to purchasing equipment.

“Big companies in the country should come in so that the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) could offer attractive prize money in their tournaments and also assists golfers to play overseas.

“Many professional golfers are quitting because they cannot perform. In the sport, a golfer also needs to spend a lot just to train on a course. Corporate backing is very crucial,” said Sukree.

Ranked among the top 10 golfers in the country, Sukree celebrated his eighth success on the PGM Tour by winning last weekend’s Sime Darby Closed Championship.

He attributed his success to his new caddy, Ghazali Sidek.

“I am thrilled because I feel my efforts are finally paying off. Ghazali has been with me for the last four events, and I feel we have good chemistry.

“He helps me a lot in terms of club selection and also advices on other aspects,” he added.
