Leun Kwang books CIMB ticket on dramatic day

KUALA LUMPUR: Kim Leun Kwang scored an emotional victory, his first success since turning professional six years ago, at the CIMB National Championship at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) Kuala Lumpur today.

It was a nail-biting end to four days of competition at TPC's East course as Leun Kwang, who led by three shots after the third round, was forced into a playoff by Amir Nazrin Jailani.

Leun Kwang carded a one-under 70 while Amir notched a commendable four-under 67 in the final round to see both players end regulation play tied on 12-under 272.

Amir, however, double bogeyed the playoff, held on the 18th hole, allowing Leun Kwang, who bogeyed, to take the RM30,000 winners cheque and a coveted slot at the CIMB Classic next month.

Amir received RM19,240 for his efforts while third-placed Mohamad Irfan Yusof (277) took home RM13,200.

Leun Kwang, 23, said: “It was crazy. Amir played really well today and gave me a good fight. I'm actually on the luckier side, I feel for him but I am happy to be able to play in the CIMB Classic.

"It means a lot to me, I've been looking for my first win for some time and I finally did it. It took me a very, very long time and there were some struggles over the years but I knew it would come some day."
