Danny, Ashley shine in rainy SportExcel Grand Finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Golfers Danny Mark Ghani and Ashley Chin Yen Ling did not let the rain dampen their winning edge today.

They swept aside their rivals to take top honours in the Genesis Corp SportExcel Junior Golf Circuit Grand Finals at Glenmarie Golf and Country Club.

Danny of Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Golf and Country Club fired a magnificent two-under 142 (75-67) to emerge as champion in both the boys A (15-18 years old) category as well as the B category.

Kelab Rahman Putra’s Darshan Gunasegar, who fired an eagle on the 15th hole in his first round, finished four strokes behind at 147 for second spot while Jayveenrhaj Gunaseelan from Monterez GCC finished third with 153.

The girls’ category saw Penang Golf Club’s Ashley trump her opponents with a two-under 142 as Zarith Sofea Mohd Sidek (164) and Sharifah Aisyah Tijan (166) came in second and third, respectively.

SportExcel Malaysia’s executive director Sivanandan Chinnadurai said this year’s seven-leg circuit was made special with the presence of Genesis Corp as sponsors.

“They made it even better and are looking to take it further, could either be golf or the other sports that SportExcel is hosting,” he said.

He added that two legs of this year’s circuit saw an overwhelming response of over 160 participants, exceeding the maximum capacity of

120.

The SportExcel circuit has produced numerous Malaysian stars including squash queen Nicol David, European Tour golfer Gavin Green and bowling sensation Shalin Zulkifli.
