A tournament in Green's name

KUALA LUMPUR: Participants have been told not to come only with golf clubs but also with questions.

That is the approach for the inaugural Gavin Green tournament on Dec 18-20 at his home course, TPC Kuala Lumpur.

Yes, Gavin, a proud product of SportExcel, will have a tournament named after him.

Gavin, 24, the national No. 1, earned a European Tour card after emerging as winner of the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

Gavin wants to give back to the sport after the SportExcel junior circuit has helped launch his career.

He hopes the inaugural tournament will encourage young Malaysian golfers to excel.

“This is something that I’ve always wanted to do. I just want to give back to the sport which has given me so much in terms of opportunities and experience.

“Growing up, golf was and is still such an integral part of my life and I want the budding golfers to be able to share in my experience and hopefully, it will help some of them stay in the sport,” said Gavin, who also encouraged participants to get their questions ready as the tournament will see additional activities such as clinics, demos and talks.

The Gavin Green tournament has received a 130-player field with 240 young golfers signing up for it. Gavin will also discuss with the golfers’ parents on development programme during the event.
