Germany knock out defending champions India

JOHOR BARU: Germany, who last played in the Sultan of Johor Cup (SoJC) 11 years ago, showed their pedigree today by outclassing defending champions India 6-3 in the semi-final at the Taman Daya Stadium.

They were the champions in the second edition in 2012 after beating India 3-2, and will play Australia for the title tomorrow.

Australia beat Pakistan 2-1 in the other semi-final with goals from Cooper Burns (18th minute) and Brodee Foster (29th).

Pakistan scored in the 59th through Shahid Hannanbut but it was too late to deny Australia their final spot.

"We love this tournament but due to our domestic league fixtures, we could not make the trip after 2012.

"But we made it a point to come to Johor this year because the World Cup will be held in similar conditions and we also got a chance to play some of the best junior teams in the world.

"The SoJC has benefited us greatly, and we are now looking forward to play in the final," said German coach Rein van Eijk.

India were totally outplayed as Germany scored through Christian Franz (16th), Nikas Berendts (29th, 45th), Peer Hinrichs (43rd, 48th) and Florian Sperling (49th).

Amandeep Lakra (35th), Uttam Singh (58th) and Rohit (60th) replied for India.

RESULTS:

Semi-finals: India 3 Germany 6; Australia 2 Pakistan 1.

7th-8th placing: Malaysia 3 South Africa 2.
