Nardolillo the late hero as Argentina edge Australia in JWC

BUKIT JALIL: Anticipated as the most exciting match of the day, the Junior World Cup (JWC) Group A clash between Argentina and Australia turned into a subdued affair, resembling a warm-up game rather than a fiercely contested encounter.

The match only came to life in the final two minutes, with Argentina walking away with the three points thanks to a 1-0 victory at the National Hockey Stadium here today.

Ignacio Nardolillo emerged as the hero for Argentina, scoring in the 58th minute.

Argentina coach Juan Gilardi was satisfied with the late comeback.

He hopes his team will maintain the momentum against Malaysia tomorrow.

"A good win against a strong team, and we hope the momentum will follow in our remaining matches. I have watched the Malaysian team (on video) playing in the Sultan of Johor Cup, and the hosts are very fast," said Gilardi.

The first half witnessed Argentina's persistent attacks, met with resilient defence from Australia under the scorching sun,

The third quarter resembled a chess game, with both teams sizing up each other, yet failing to produce a goal.

However, Nardolillo sealed it for Argentina with a close-range effort.
