Arbaz inspired by Pakistan legend Sohail

KUALA LUMPUR: When one talks about Pakistan hockey, one name always comes to mind - Sohail Abbas.

Arbaz Ahamad, a burly defender playing in the Junior World Cup (JWC) in Kuala Lumpur, wants to be a penalty corner scoring machine in the mould of the legendary Sohail.

Sohail, hailed as the King of drag flicks, was regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and was Pakistan's greatest scorer with 348 goals from 1998 to 2012.

The 20-year-old Arbaz comes from Gojra City, Pakistan, which has produced a lot of Olympians. So far, he has scored two JWC goals from penalty corners, in the draws against the Netherlands (3-3) and Belgium (1-1).

The two goals from Arbaz helped Pakistan finish second in Group D, regarded, as the group of death, and qualified for the JWC quarter-finals after 18 years. And big guns Belgium didn't make it.

Arbaz, who scored a record 11 goals from six matches in this year's Hangzhou Asian Games, said Sohail is his idol and the greatest player in history.

"My dream is to play like Sohail. This is my first JWC and expectation is high on me to help Pakistan finish in a good position."

He said with the guidance of Dutch coach Roelant Oltmans, Pakistan aim to get the better of Spain in the JWC quarter-finals.

Pakistan played Spain three times in the JWC and the former won twice and drew once. In the last meeting 30 years ago in Terrassa, Spain, Pakistan outplayed Spain 5-0.
