Maybank see red in MHL opener

KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank defender Najmi Farizal Jazlan was flashed a red card by umpire Ahmad Nazirul in their opening Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) match against Tenaga Nasional in Bukit Jalil on Friday.

The Tigers were reduced to 10 men in the 45th minute when Najmi was given the marching orders for using harsh words against umpire Ahmad.

Maybank also blew a 3-0 lead, and the match ended in a 3-3 draw.

A total of nine cards - one red, two yellow and six green were issued.

The Tigers scored through Razie Rahim (fifth), Najmi (14th) and Shafiq Ikhmal Daniel Suzaini (26th).

But Tenaga, powered by 10 national players and Korean penalty corner drag flicker, Jang Jong Hyun, came back strongly in the last 19 minutes to score three goals.

Captain Syed Syafiq Syed Kamal scored two penalty corner goals (41st, 44th) and Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi got one (54th).

Tenaga coach Nor Saiful Zaini said his team had a slow start, and they did not defend well in the first two quarters.

"We had seven new players in the squad, and they took some time to settle down.

"In the 45th minute, Maybank were reduced to 10 men, and we used the opportunity to penetrate their defence to score the goals and snatch a crucial point," said Saiful.

Results: Young Elephants of Pahang 0 UiTM 2, Nurinsafi Sporting 2 Armed Forces 1, Liaoning Club 1 TNB Thunderbolts 2, Maybank 3 Tenaga Nasional 3, JM Antbees 3 KL City 10.
