Tenaga crowned MHL champions after 21-year wait

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional clinched their first Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) title in 21 years after hammering JW Antsbees 22-1 at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday.

Tenaga and Terengganu, who edged Maybank 4-3, both finished equal on 26 points, but the former were crowned champions on goal difference.

Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal was Tenaga's star by scoring six goals in the 10th, 12th, 33rd, 33rd, 47th and 53rd minutes, bringing his tally to 23 goals from 10 matches.

South Korean Jang Jung Hyun scored five in the third, fifth, 22nd, 46th and 51st minutes, while captain Syed Syafiq Syed Cholan scored four (ninth, 24th, 24th, and 26th).

Firhan Ashari (second, 58th), Najib Abu Hassan (third), Azril Misron (31st), Shahril Saabah (45th), Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi (50th) and Danish Aiman (56th) netted the other goals for Tenaga.

South Korean Moon Uju replied for JW Antsbees in the eight minute.

Tenaga Nasional coach Nor Saiful Zaini was thrilled with his team's performance.

"I won the league title as a player for Tenaga back in 2003, and today, as a coach.

"It shows Tenaga's programme is bearing fruits."

Tenaga, who also won the Charity Shield, will be going for a treble when the TNB Cup starts on March 1.

"We want to end the MHL with a bang by also winning the TNB Cup," said Saiful, who has been coaching Tenaga since 2010.

Tenaga, who won the TNB Cup in 2022, will face KL City in the two-legged quarter-finals.
