Vicky set to be named new national junior hockey coach

KUALA LUMPUR: Former national player I. Vickneswaran is among the front runners for the national junior hockey coaching position.

The others in the running are former captain Madzli Ikmar and Baljit Singh Charun.

Vickneswaran, who is the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Association (KLHA) president, was the national junior team manager at the Junior World Cups in 2021 Bhubaneswar and 2023 Kuala Lumpur.

Fondly known as Vicky, he played in the Junior World Cup in 1993 and earned 53 senior caps from 1994 to 1996.

A Level Three coaching certificate holder, Vickneswaran has guided several teams to titles in the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) and the Razak Cup.

Vickneswaran, if appointed, will select 40 players from the Malaysia Junior Hockey League (MJHL), which ends in Junior, for trials.

The major assignments this year for the National Juniors are the Sultan of Johor Cup in October and the Junior Asia Cup in December.

His son V. Sriraam, 20, who played for KL City in the MHL, is among 46 players called up for national senior team training under newly appointed coach Sarjit Singh.
