Fuji high for Malaysian trio

KUALA LUMPUR: World Endurance Championship (WEC) trio Jazeman Jaafar, Nabil Jeffri and Weiron Tan created history by becoming the first all-Malaysian team to win a race in the series today.

The three, who took turns at the wheel of Jackie Chan DC Racing's No 37 Oreca 07 car, emerged victorious in the LMP2 class. They finished sixth in the overall classification at the Six Hours of Fuji in Japan.

They managed a total of 217 laps, crossing the line 26.087 seconds ahead of DC Racing teammates (car No 38) Ho Pin Tung, Stephane Richelmi and Gabriel Aubry.

Signatech Alpine Matmut's (car No 36) Nicolas Lapierre, Andre Negrao and Pierre Thiriet were third in class (+44.3s).

Weiron said it was an emotional moment for the trio, who are competing in their maiden season in WEC series.

“Today was very special and very emotional, it was a proud moment to be standing on the top step of the podium.

“Jazeman and Nabil both drove superbly and I believe I also did a really good stint at the wheel as well. It was a big team effort.

“I would like to thank Sepang International Circuit for giving us the opportunity to compete in WEC as well as DC Racing and all those who have supported us."

The three drivers are under the SIC's Driver Talent Development programme.

Four more rounds remain this season with China set to host the next leg with the Six Hours of Shanghai on Nov 18.
