Malaysian GP race cancelled for second year in a row

KUALA LUMPUR: MotoGP fans will have to wait at least another year before they can watch their favourite teams in action at Sepang Circuit as the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix has been cancelled for a second year in a row due to Covid-19.

The Sepang International Circuit (SIC), which had earlier this week said a decision on the race would be made soon, yesterday confirmed its cancellation in a statement released to the media.

"SIC regrets to announce the cancellation of the Malaysian GP which was scheduled for Oct 22-24," said the statement.

"Earlier this year, the MotoGP Sepang official test and shakedown test, which were set to take place in February, were also affected.

"Despite the setbacks, SIC remains optimistic and looks forward to featuring this race in 2022."

The race's cancellation does not come as a huge surprise considering the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the country.

The Malaysian GP, which made its debut in 1991, was cancelled for the first time in its history last year.
