58-year-old para table tennis player still a fighter; wins Para KL2017 bronze

KUALA LUMPUR: While most others her age spend their time at home, Chung Sow Fun is still actively winning sports medals for the country.

The 58-year-old is the oldest player in the national table tennis team at the Kuala Lumpur Asean Para Games (Para KL2017).

She proved she is still a force after winning bronze in the singles SF5 (wheelchair with normal sitting balance, arm and hand function) category at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) today.

Sow Fun, who has competed in four editions of the Asean Para Games, said she is still keen on representing Malaysia in the future, and is eyeing a slot on the team at the Manila games, two years from now.

"If I am selected, why not? I will continue representing the country for as long as I am capable," said Sow Fun, whose best achievement was a silver at the Singapore Games in 2015.

"I started quite late, at 50, so I am still quite motivated to keep playing for Malaysia," she added.

Sow Fun disclosed that she took up table tennis after retiring from her working career. She places emphasis on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and also cooks on a daily basis.

"Besides training, I do housework on a daily basis and cook for up to 15 people every day," she said.

The national table tennis squad ended the Para KL2017 with one gold, two silver and eight bronze medals.
