Gillian hopes to earn national team call up

KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak bowler Gillian Lim is hoping to make the national youth squad this year after two failed attempts.

On Monday, the 18-year-old did well to clinch the girls' singles title at the 18th Asian Schools Bowling Championships in Kuching.

Gillian, who also won the Sabah leg of the National Junior Circuit in July, reeled in lines of 206,223, 210, 253, 183, 196 for a total 1,271 pinfalls at the Megalanes Sarawak in Batu Kawa.

The Miri-born, representing Malaysia A, finished ahead of Australia's Emily Johnston (1,264), and teammate Puteri Nurul Dini (1,251).

Gillian, when contacted said: "The lanes were tough, so I had to stay focused on my game. I am happy to have won the girls' singles title today.”

“I hope to continue my momentum in the doubles and team events.

"My dream is to earn a call up to the national youth squad. I need to do well in the National Junior Circuit Grand Prix Finals next month. I have been trying hard for the past two years and have always been a little unlucky.

"Last year, I finished second in both the GP Final and the Masters event at the Malaysian Games in Kuching. I want to do better this year.

"This is also my last year to prove myself, especially after training hard under both my coaches Jackson Ting and Angelo Koay."

Gillian's best achievement so far is winning the Under-18 title at the Thailand Open two years ago.

In the boys' singles event, Malaysia's Ahmad Azriq settled for the silver medal after posting lines of 243, 209, 205, 233, 278, 204 for a total of 1,372 pinfalls.

Hong Kong's Ivan Tse, bagged the gold on 1,405 pinfalls while Singapore's Aidan Poh (1,332) took home the bronze medal.
