Egyptian Nour thrilled to beat 'legend' Nicol

KUALA LUMPUR: Nicol David's run at the Saudi Women's Masters came to an end in the quarter-finals after a three-game defeat by Nour El Tayeb in Riyadh today.

Egyptian Nour's 11-7, 14-12, 11-9 win was her first over former World No 1 Nicol in 10 meetings.

It put Nour into the last-four alongside compatriots Nour El Sherbini, Raneem El Weleily and Nouran Gohar in an Egyptian sweep of the semi-final places.

World No 6 Nicol was denied in her attempt to reach the semi-finals of a PSA World Series event for the first time since the British Open in March last year.

"I am out of words. This is the first time ever I managed to get a win against the legend of all games," said World No 7 Nour.

"There are no words to describe Nicol. She is the reason why today’s game is what it is. I’m so proud."

Eight-time world champion Nicol failed to convert three game-point chances in the second game while leading 10-8 and 12-11 which could have turned the match around.

Nour then allowed Nicol to wipe out a 9-5 lead but held on to secure two more points for the win.

Nicol will now turn her attention to the Tournament of Champions which begins in New York on Jan 20.

Seeded sixth, Nicol faces a qualifier in the first round before a likely meeting with New Zealand's Joelle King in the last-16.
