Coach Ajaz brushes off 'fasting' debate in Sivasangari's win over Egyptian Nour

KUALA LUMPUR: National coach Ajaz Azmat expressed his dismay at critics who suggested that S. Sivasangari had an unfair advantage in her victory over world No. 1 Nour El Sherbini of Egypt in the London Classic quarter-finals on Saturday (March 30).

Critics on social media claimed that Sivasangari only won because Nour was fasting.

Sivasangari defeated the seven-time world champion 11-9, 11-9.

"Some fans posted that Nour struggled on the court because she was fasting. These comments are not constructive and can affect the emotions of players," said Ajaz.

"I have advised Sivasangari to refrain from social media as it may impact her focus. I want her to be fully concentrated when she faces world No. 2 Hania El Hammamy of Egypt in the final today."

Ajaz stressed that Sivasangari's victory over Nour was not a fluke.

"Sivasangari proved herself by defeating world No. 4 Nele Gilis in a grueling 94-minute semi-final match on Saturday (March 30).

"She is now set for another challenging encounter against the physically and mentally strong Hania.

We anticipate another closely contested battle.

"However, I am confident that Sivasangari will emerge victorious and create history," he added.
