Malaysia to be Esports hub in Asia: Syed Saddiq

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has pledged to transform Malaysia into an esports powerhouse not only in Asean but also Asia.

Syed Saddiq also said he aims to tap into the billion-dollar industry and expand its growth in Malaysia to help with the country's youth development.

“I will try my best to bring whatever facilities, investments and development there is so that esports gamers and players will have a place.

"If they can’t come here (Singapore), they don’t need to, because in the end, in a place called home, we can bring it to them,” he said.

Syed Saddiq was speaking during a two-day work visit to Singapore where he visited the country's youth hubs to look into the possibility of building similar centres locally.

Earlier, the country's youngest minister managed to watch the Malaysian League of Legends team advancing to the finals in the first Asean League of Legends competition at Hyperplay Singapore.

Hyperplay, which was held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, brings youths together through two of the biggest cultural cornerstones today – esports and music.
