Rafiq out to stamp his mark on Asiad

KUALA LUMPUR: The Indonesian Asian Games could mark the coming of age for national bowling champion Rafiq Ismail.

After finishing second last year on the Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) rankings, Rafiq could cement his status as Asia's No 1 if he hits top form in Palembang.

Despite a poor outing at the recent World Youth Championships in Detroit, United States last month, hopes are high on the 20-year-old to shine at the Games.

"Rafiq is definitely our top guy, and quite honestly, I think he learnt a crucial lesson at the World Youth Championships, because he expected too much. Now he is much more composed," said Malaysia Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) secretary general Maradona Chok.

With just six gold medals (men's and women's trios, team of six and Masters) at stake this year, the southpaw is also a favourite for a podium finish in the Masters.

"He (Rafiq) is surely our best bet, he is world class really. Even the USA's Professional Bowler's Association (PBA) were impressed by him.

"No doubt, he is one of the best in Asia. He strikes fear in others. It's time to come of age for him," added Maradona.

Despite the expectations on Rafiq to deliver, Maradona explained that the strength of the men's squad lies in their unity.

"We are looking at the team event, because these guys, they trust each other and that is their strongest point. Adrian (Ang) has also been consistent, and with the new 10-frame scoring format, it could be an advantage for us," said Maradona.

Apart from Rafiq and Adrian, the others in the squad are 2012 AMF World Cup winner Syafiq Ridhwan, Alex Liew, Ahmad Muaz Fishol and Timmy Tan.

Four years ago, both the men's and women's squads landed Malaysia four silver medals.

Bowling rolls off with the women's trios event on Wednesday (Aug 22) at the JSC Bowling Centre in Palembang.
