Khairul Hafiz targets 4x100m record

JAKARTA: Sprinter Khairul Hafiz Jantan believes he and his teammates have sufficient time to prepare for the Asian Games men’s 4x100m event on Thursday.

Khairul and Jonathan Nyepa both did respectably by reaching the men’s 100m semi-finals on Sunday.

“For the 4x100m, I hope we can do our best and smash the national record,” he said.

The current record of 39.27s was achieved by quartet Haiqal Hanafi, Nyepa, Badrul Hisyam Manap and Nixson Kennedy at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Sea Games. Khairul withdrew then due to a hamstring injury.

“At the moment, there are no injuries. We will discuss with our coach on who should start first in the race.

“We have been training as a quartet for more than two months and we feel we are ready for the challenge,” said Khairul.

Meanwhile, Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian failed to go beyond the heats in the 100m hurdles at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Monday.

He clocked 14.15s to finish 12th out of 18 hurdlers.
