Wee Wern on the brink of fourth title this year

KUALA LUMPUR: Low Wee Wern is now just a match away from winning her fourth PSA Tour tournament since coming back from a 20-month injury layoff after clocking in another consummate performance at the Q Open in Queensland, Australia today.

Wee Wern, who breezed through the early rounds, faced her toughest opponent so far in the form compatriot Ooi Kah Yah in the semi-finals of the US$5,500 (RM22,869) tournament today.

Kah Yan, 17, pushed her senior hard in the second and third set before Wee Wern closed out the match 11-2, 12-10, 14-12 in 26 minutes at the Carrara Squash Centre.

She faces Australian Jessica Turnbull in the final tomorrow. The latter defeated Aika Azman 11-2, 12-10, 12-10 (24 minutes) in her semi-final.

Wee Wern said she was relieved to get away with a quick win against Kah Yan but is wary of the threat posed by Jessica, who is World No 77.

The duo have never played before.

"The last two games were close. Then again, the last time we played I won 3-2. It's always good to get away with a 3-0 win," said the Penangite, who is ranked 54th.

"I've not played Jessica before and she seems to be playing well to be able to beat Aika 3-0."

Wee Wern, who struggled with injuries in recent seasons, played her first tournament in almost two years at the National Championships, where she reached the final, in early July.

She, however, went on to win three PSA tournaments in a row after that at the Malaysian Open, Tasmanian Open and Australian Open.
