Wee Wern cruises in Cincinnati

KUALA LUMPUR: National No 1 Low Wee Wern got off to a winning start in the Cincinnati Cup squash championship, as she looks to continue where she left off in the United States.

The former World No. 5’s last outing on American soil was a pleasant one as she scored a fine win over USA’s world No 8 Amanda Sobhy en route to reaching the quarter-finals of the Carol Weymuller Open in Brooklyn.

Yesterday, Wee Wern, 29, scored an impressive 11-7, 11-5, 11-4 win over Australia’s Sarah Cardwell in the second round at the Cincinnati Country Club.

The World No. 25, who received a first round bye, took a little while to settle into the match as Sarah looked to take the game to her.

But the Penangite eventually found her rhythm to win the first game 11-7 and it was cruise control from there as she finished off Sarah in 31 minutes.

“It’s really good to have a good run in the first match of any tournament especially since the court conditions here are very different from home,” said Wee Wern.

“It took me a bit of time to find the right height and length but I managed to do so and I wasn’t really troubled too much.”

But she has a tough match-up against World No. 7 Sarah-Jane Perry of England in her next match. Sarah-Jane had earlier got past Egyptian Mayar Hany 11-5, 9-11, 11-4, 11-5.

“It’s definitely going to be a lot tougher as Sarah-Jane is a quality opponent. I haven’t played her in a really long time as the exhibition match I had with her last year doesn’t count,” said Wee Wern.
