37 athletes quarantined, NSC shut operations

BUKIT JALIL: Thirty-seven national athletes and 10 officials, who had close contact with hammer thrower Jackie Wong, have been quarantined.

Jackie tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday.

National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail said these athletes and officials will be tested tomorrow and results are expected on the following day.

All facilities used by Jackie at the NSC have been disinfected while all athletes and coaches, who are not quarantined, have been sent home.

This is in line with the nationwide restricted movement order which starts today until March 31.

NSC staff will work from home except for a small team who will be responsible to service the daily needs of the quarantined athletes.

“The concerned athletes and officials have been quarantined at the Casa One hostel (NSC Complex). If their results are negative, they will be allowed to head home,” said Shapawi at the NSC headquarters here today.

The NSC and National Sports Institute (NSI) have also formed a joint action committee to handle the Covid-19 pandemic.

The committee have decided to shut down all training centres and hostels under NSC.

This shutdown includes all training centres and facilities in Bukit Jalil as well as the Mokhtar Dahari Academy (Gambang), National Badminton Academy (Bukit Kiara), Sixth College in Universiti Putra Malaysia, the Paralympic Centre of Excellence (Kampung Pandan) and the National Sailing Training Centre (Langkawi).
