Malaysia Rugby allow only the 15s to go on

WHILE allowing state level 15s tournaments to resume, Malaysia Rugby (MR) have pulled the brakes on every other domestic competition for now.

The national body, after consulting their affiliates, decided not to hold national level competitions such as the Agong's Cup, National Sevens and Malaysia Rugby League (MRL) this year.

MR also confirmed that all sevens and 10s competitions, which are usually held over the weekend, are also not allowed for now.

State level 15s competitions, which are often spaced out over a longer period, however, can resume beginning August 15 in line with the government's easing of restrictions.

MR competitions director Fahmy Jalil said the majority of MR affiliates have agreed to not hold national level competitions this year.

"Many of the teams would not be prepared to compete in national level competitions such as the Agong's Cup this year for a number of reasons," said Fahmy.

"Getting their players fit in time would be a challenge because many of their players are from universities and they are all spread out as they have returned home. Some teams are also facing financial difficulty due to Covid-19.'

Fahmy said crowd control during sevens and 10s competitions, which can involve in excess of 20 teams over a weekend, would be a major issue.

"The fields we use such as at Universiti Putra Malaysia are open, and it is very difficult for us to stop people from coming in to watch the matches.

"And even if there were no spectators, when two teams are playing on the field what are the 20 other teams doing? They will be watching the match being played so effectively, they also become spectators.

"It is much easier to control 15s matches because usually only two teams are involved on a specific match day."
