Monteiro throws hat into ring for SRAM's hot seat

IT looks like this year's Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) annual general meeting (AGM)-cum-elections is going to be a heated affair.

In a rare fight for the top post, incumbent president Nik Razeen A. Daud will be challenged by his deputy Gerard Monteiro during the AGM on Sunday.

It is expected to be a tight contest between the 66-year-old Nik Razeen, who assumed the post from Huang Ying How in 2018 and Monteiro, a former Selangor player.

And Nik Razeen, who hails from Negri Sembilan, is certainly relishing the challenge.

"I will be defending my post. I believe I have a good track record as president," said Nik Razeen.

"We've had some failings, but as a national sports association (NSA) we've had some good years too.

"This is a tough year that is badly affected by the Covid-19 situation and it would have been nice to see some unity.

"However, I respect the decision of anyone who wants to stand for the post.

"I certainly welcome the challenge.

"I believe in the will of the state affiliates and I will accept whatever results gracefully.

"But while I'm not a person who wants to hang on to this position forever, I believe that I still have a lot to offer."

When probed, Nik Razeen elaborated that he hoped to keep pushing for players to build a career for themselves beyond squash.

"I believe it is the responsibility of an NSA to see their national players receive a good education so that they progress further in their careers.

"Squash can always be a passion but education is something that they need to have," added Nik Razeen.

With Monteiro eyeing up the top post, the deputy president's post is also up for grabs.

And it is rumoured that men's former World No 10 Azlan Iskandar, who has not been an SRAM office-bearer since 2015, has thrown his name into the hat.

Another former national player, Sharon Wee is also believed to have thrown her name into the mix for a vice-president's seat.
