Petrus impresses Down Under

NATIONAL rugby player Lawrence Petrus ended his maiden season Down Under on a high note by helping his team emerge victorious in the Championship Division of the Rugby WA Fortescue Premier Grade League on Saturday.

The University of Western Australia (UWA) player was named in the starting line up in the Championship Division final against Joondalup. UWA ran out 21-17 winners at the McGillivray Oval in Mount Claremount.

Teams who finished fifth to eighth in the ladder stage of the Premier Grade League made the cut for the Championship Division. UWA were seventh from 14 teams in the ladder stage.

Lawrence said UWA's strong discipline paid dividends in the final.

"Yesterday's (Saturday) game was tight. UWA, however, were more disciplined both defensively and in attack," said Lawrence yesterday.

"We managed to get the result we wanted. I am very happy to win the Championship Division.

"We finished fifth. We will come back stronger next year."

The former UPM Angels player hopes to continue for a second season with UWA.

"I would love to continue playing in Perth with UWA, but it is still too early to say how things will go.

"UWA have verbally expressed their intent to extend my contract. When things have firmed up, I will update everyone."

Sabah-born Lawrence was also named in the league's team of the week twice in week 10 and 13 of the competition.
