Tokyo delight for Syaqiera

An archer who has not even won a medal at the Malaysia Games will now carry the nation's hopes at the Tokyo Olympics this month.

Understandably, archer Syaqiera Mashayikh, who joined the national team only last year, is over the moon after securing an Olympic berth.

However, the 21-year-old should thank her lucky stars for earning a spot.

Syaqiera made the cut after World Archery found that some of the 64 qualifiers did not meet the Minimum Qualification Score (MQS) of 605 points for the women's recurve event.

Syaqiera had scored 619 points at the Olympics qualifiers and the Archery World Cup (Stage Three) in Paris last month.

She was chosen ahead of compatriots Nurul Azreena Fazil and Nur Ain Ayuni Fozi.

For the record, Syaqiera is only the third Malaysian female archer, after Mon Redee Sut Txi (2004 Athens Games) and Nurul Syafiqah Hashim (2012 London Games), to qualify for an Olympic Games.

She will compete in the individual recurve and the mixed team with Khairul Anuar Mohamad in Tokyo.

"I did not expect this as it was never part of my plan to qualify for the Tokyo Games. It is like a dream as I have yet to win a medal in the Malaysia Games. I am grateful for this opportunity," said Syaqiera, who studies mass communication at Universiti Putra Malaysia, yesterday.

"I average 620 points in training, so scoring 619 points in the tournaments in Paris was not a huge surprise. It is all about focus in archery, and I will just do that in Tokyo.

"Of course, there is pressure now as the Olympic Games is the biggest and most prestigious event in the world.

"I will go to Tokyo with a target to set a new personal best, and anything more than that will be a bonus."

Yesterday, the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) also confirmed golfer Kelly Tan's Olympic berth, making it 26 qualifiers so far for the Tokyo Games on July 23-Aug 8.

However, the list could increase as four more athletes — Lee Hup Wei (men's high jump), Azreen Nabila Alias (women's 100m), Welson Sim (men's 200m and 400m freestyle) and Phee Jinq En (women's 100m breaststroke) — are still awaiting their Olympic confirmation.
