Jinq En plays her part, Welson disappoints

Phee Jinq En was Malaysia's best performer in the pool at the Tokyo Olympics following decent outings in the women's 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

The 23-year-old swimmer shaved 0.1s off her previous national record by clocking 1:08.40s in the 100m breaststroke heats to finish 29th overall.

She also kept it up in the 200m heats by clocking 2:32.57 for a season-best time, which was not too far off her personal best of 2:32.38 set at the 2019 Sea Games, to finish 31st overall.

If anything, Jinq En certainly has the capacity to go faster, and with the right support system, can be counted on to deliver again in the future.

On the contrary, Welson Sim failed to make inroads in the men's 200m and 400m freestyle events.

He clocked a poor 3:58.25 in the 400m that was way off his national record of 3:49.29.

However, Welson did post a season-best time of 1:49.24 in the 200m freestyle, but it was scant consolation and left a lot to be desired.

Perhaps, it is time for Welson to reassess his training options if he hopes to regain his old form.
