Para athletes 'pumped up and eager'

With no competitions for almost two years, the Paralympic-bound athletes are eager to show the world what they can do and achieve in Tokyo.

Chef de Mission Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin (pic) said the 22-strong contingent is raring for action at the Paralympics, which starts tomorrow.

The Paralympics would be their first multi-sport event since the 2018 Indonesia Asian Para Games, where they won 17 gold, 26 silver and 25 bronze.

Untested for almost two years following the cancellation of the 2019 Manila and 2021 Vietnam Asean Para Games, these athletes hope they can return with medals from Tokyo.

"I feel great and am so happy that we are finally getting the show started. Queen's famous song 'I want to break free' sums up how I feel," said Shahriman.

"The athletes are pumped up and eager to perform in their respective events as they have had limited opportunities to compete for almost two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"There have been very few competitions available around the world, and as you know, the Asean Para Games were also cancelled.

"They have just been training and training all this while. These athletes have had their fair share of ups and downs in training, but they are on track now and are focused.

"We are not going to waste any time. The athletes will give their 100 per cent, and hopefully, bring home medals."

Shahriman, also the Paralympic Council of Malaysia president, disclosed that they had little choice but to cancel their plans to acclimatise in Miyoshi City before the Paralympics.

The athletes were supposed to spend 10 days in Miyoshi before checking into the Paralympic games village.

"We decided not to go following a spike in Covid cases in Malaysia," Shahriman added.

"However, we hope to head to Miyoshi for future programmes once the Covid-19 situation improves."

Except for the badminton squad, other Malaysian athletes have arrived in Tokyo for the Paralympics.

Malaysia have set a three-gold medal target for the Games.
