There is a move to bring squash's Malaysian Open closer to the World Team Championships in Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysian Open, initially scheduled for Oct 26-30, is now proposed for Nov 23-27. The world meet is from Dec 7-12.

And the Asian Team Championships from Nov 30-Dec 4 will also make it a series of back-to-back tournaments in Kuala Lumpur.

This is to allow the foreign players to have a better timeframe in coping with the quarantine upon coming to Malaysia.

"I think the most important factor is that we have to work within the travel restrictions and quarantine regulations in regard to foreign players coming in," said Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia director Major (Rtd) S. Maniam.

"We want to try and ease the passage of the foreign players so that they are encouraged to come and participate.

"If the tournaments are too far apart, then players would have to travel in and out of the country, and would be stuck in quarantine too often and that would not be very ideal.

"We had a discussion with the National Sports Council on Monday, and they brought up the possibility of having three back-to-back tournaments.

"Logistically it would make a lot more sense and there is also a suggestion to create a sports carnival atmosphere within the tournament bubble in order to kickstart the interest in the sport once again.

"We've already gotten the approval from the Asian Squash Federation in regard to the Asian team meet and I've also written to the Professional Squash Association and awaiting their response now.

"Once we get the approval from all parties, we will submit it to the Youth and Sports Ministry together with the standard operating procedures for having all three tournaments in a row," added Maniam.
