Australia withdraw, Malaysia going ahead

Australia have backed out, and two more teams are expected to withdraw from hockey's Junior World Cup (JWC) in India from Nov 24-Dec 5.

But Malaysia have no plans to follow suit as 21 national juniors get ready for a playing tour of Britain this month.

"Yes, Australia have officially announced their intention to withdraw from the men and women's JWCs. I have also heard that New Zealand and another European team will make the same announcement soon," said national juniors team manager I. Vikneswaran.

"Many teams are wary of Covid-19 as well as travel restrictions, but the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) have started a final push with a tour of Britain on Sept 26-Oct 16.

"Malaysia have no plans to withdraw from the JWC at the moment."

India are also in two minds about the current JWC venue in Guwahati, Assam, and may shift it to Bhubaneswar in Odisha. Bhubaneswar hosted the 2018 senior World Cup.

"The host state, as well as tournament concept, is still not confirmed yet as India is thinking of moving it from Guwahati to Bhubaneswar.

"I was also told that the tournament will not be held under a bubble but an open concept will be used. However, information about the venue and SOP for the tournament has yet to be officially released," said Vikneswaran.

Sixteen teams from five continents have qualified for the JWC. Malaysia became automatic qualifiers after the Junior Asia Cup could not be organised due to the pandemic. Any withdrawals will see standby teams taking up the vacant slots.
