Razak Cup action for those dropped from Junior World Cup

THE players for the Malaysian team to the Junior World Cup (JWC) will be named in a week's time, and those not selected will be allowed to turn out for for their states in the Razak Cup.

The Razak Cup will be held at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Nov 10-20 while the JWC in India is on Nov 24-Dec 5.

"We will be naming the final squad soon and releasing those dropped to play for their states in the Razak Cup. Right now, our main worry is about the two injured players.

"They are receiving treatment at ISN (National Sports Institute) and we will know in a week's time if they can play or not.

"They picked up the injuries during our recent Britain tour, and even though they are our main figures in midfield, we have contingency plans if they can't recover in time.

"There are 28 players in training for the Junior World Cup right now," said National Juniors team manager I. Vikneswaran.

Hafizi Zainuddin is troubled by a knee issue while Syamim Naim is down with a hamstring injury picked up during the eight-match Britain tour.

The Bhubanesar World Cup is only three weeks away, and Malaysia are in Group A with Belgium, Chile and South Africa.

"Even during our eight-day quarantine upon returning from the Britain tour, both the boys were under ISN rehabilitation programme and this helped a little.

"We do not know what the doctor will say in a week's time, but we are ready to face any eventuality," said Vikneswaran.

The team will go to India a week earlier to acclimatise to the pitch conditions, as well as the cool and dry weather expected there end of November.
