Latecomer Ainaa serves a surprise at Malaysian Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Last minute entry Ainaa Amani created the biggest upset in the Malaysian Open first round at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil today.

The world No 106 stunned world No 38 Zeina MicKawy of Egypt 12-10, 6-11, 7-11, 11-7,11-6 in 48 minutes.

Ainaa, 20, who was asked to play after the withdrawal of a foreign player, will face defending champion Aifa Azman tomorrow for a place in the quarter-final.

Ainaa, who was overjoyed over the unexpected win, said: "I was only entered for the tournament on Saturday and at the last minute. This is the first time I'm playing in the Malaysian Open and I was not that prepared for it but I pulled off my biggest career win.

"I had a good start against Zeina, winning the first set before losing the next two. But I never gave up and played hard to win the next two sets.

"I'm looking forward to another good performance against Aifa. It's never easy playing against Aifa but I will try to create another upset."

Meanwhile world 83 Addeen Idrakie upset world No. 22 Omar Mosaad of Egypt 14-12, 11-5, 11-13, 11-7 in 64 minutes.

Addeen, 38, will next meet seventh seed Raphael Kandra of Germany. The Malaysian said this is his biggest win in a PSA tournament.

"I won today because of my game plan and fitness. My plan was to attack him from the back court as he's slow in the back court and it worked well."

Ng Eain Yow, who stunned world No 2 Paul Coll of New Zealand in the second round of the Singapore Open last week, defeated Leandro Romiglio of Argentina 11-7, 11-5, 11-8. He will face second seed Joel Makin of Wales in the second round tomorrow.

"It was a good straight sets win against Leandro, but my main challenge will be against Makin whom I haven't beaten this year."
