Pandelela, Tze Liang make big GP splash in near-empty venue

KUALA LUMPUR: Only 10 fans showed up to watch Malaysia win two gold medals on the opening day of the KL Diving GP at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil today.

The other 'spectators' at the venue were divers and officials.

Pandelela Rinong won Malaysia's first gold of the day in the women's 10m platform after garnering 324.70pts.

Compatriot Ooi Tze Liang claimed the men's 3m springboard gold with 441.35 points, followed by Chew Yi Wei (406.90).

Australia, Egypt, Indonesia and South Korea are also competing for honours in the competition. However, Australia have brought a young team.

"Although I am more focused on my studies now, I did a season-best mark today. My next event is the 3m synchro, and I hope to do my best," said Tze Liang.

It was the 28-year-old's first win since the GP title in 2019.

"I am studying sports science at Universiti Malaya, and it is my final year," he added.

Yi Wei and Tze Liang will pair up for the synchro event on Saturday.
