Shasmithaa, Amir advance to finals in Seremban

KUALA LUMPUR: Second seed N. Shasmithaa registered a straight sets win over South Korean Ain Jun to qualify for her first final at the WSF Satellite No. 1 Tournament at Sungei Ujong Club in Seremban today.

The 20-year-old player downed Ain Jun 11-5, 11-5, 11-9 in their semi-final encounter to set up a date with top seed Wong Heng Wai in the women's final tomorrow.

Heng Wai came back from the brink of defeat to beat unseeded Whitney Isabelle Wilson 10-12, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9 in the other semi-final.

Shasmithaa, who turned professional last year, said she did not expect to beat Ain Jun in straight sets.

"This is the first time I have faced the South Korean player (Ain Jun). I am happy to have been able to play a consistent game and reach my first ever final," said Shasmithaa, who is from Selangor.

"I am looking forward to another good match against my compatriot Heng Wai and hope to clinch my first PSA title.

"Although I am seeded lower than her, I have beaten Heng Wai before and am optimistic I can do it again tomorrow."

Shasmithaa defeated Heng Wai in a tough five-set encounter to finish third in the 2019 Kuala Lumpur Junior Open.

In the men's competition today, top seed Amir Amirul Azhar came back from a set down to defeat joint ninth-16th seed Jeongmin Ryu of South Korea 7-11, 11-4, 12-10, 11-8 and advance to the final.

In the final tomorrow, Amir will face another Korean, joint third-fourth seed Minwoo Lee.

Minwoo had upset second seed Harith Danial Jefri 11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6 in the other semi-final.

Amir, who turned professional in 2019, admitted he was forced to dig deep today.

"I did not have a good start against Jeongmin today, but I bounced back and was able to beat him," said the 19-year-old from Kelantan.

"I have never played Minwoo before, but I hope to play well and lift my first satellite title."
