Hadi shoots down possibility of rejoining national team

KUALA LUMPUR: Former national shooter Abdul Hadi Abdul Malek proved he remains a formidable force in the sport at the recent Selangor Shooting Championships (SSC) but has made it clear he has no interest in rejoining the national programme.

Hadi, who was dropped from the national team in June last year, raised eyebrows at SSC as he broke the national record after firing a 557 score (92, 90, 95, 93, 94, 93) en route to gold in the 50m pistol event at the Subang Shooting Range.

The previous record of 556 (Alais Neek Sulong) had stood since 2011.

Hadi, 27, also won the men's 10m air pistol as well as the mixed team 10m air pistol with Bibiana Ng to complete a hat-trick of gold at SSC.

He achieved all this using borrowed pistols and had only trained for two days prior to the meet as he is no longer part of the national team programme.

Hadi, who is a lance corporal, said he will continue to represent Police in upcoming competitions but does not want to be part of the national team again.

"I was dropped from the national team last June and I only trained for two days as I am busy with my job at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol)," said Hadi.

"I feel proud of myself as I was able to do better (at SSC) than national shooters who train throughout the year. If I get an offer to rejoin the national training (programme) I will not accept it as I had a bad experience with National Sports Council officials last year.

"I no longer have an interest in representing Malaysia in international competitions but I am happy to represent Police in domestic events."

Hadi was part of the bronze medal winning 50m pistol team, alongside Eddy Chew and Johnathan Wong, at the 2013 Myanmar Sea Games.

He was also part of the Hanoi Sea Games squad last year but did not win any medals.
