Wee Wern still going strong after many surgeries

KUALA LUMPUR: Low Wee Wern is one squash player who does not give up despite the many surgeries on her knees.

The Penangite has turned 33, but still has the fire in her to play in PSA tournaments.

Ranked world No. 5 in 2014, Wee Wern has undergone a series of knee surgeries. And despite being written off, she came back to win her fourth national women's title in 2020.

Unfortunately she was forced to go under the knife again in 2021. Yet, she is making her final comeback on the professional tour and doing part-time coaching as well.

Last December, Wee Wern was ranked 437th but in less than a year she has gone up to 61st after some fine results in PSA competitions.

In May, Wee Wern reached the SQ Cube Open final in Japan before losing to Hong Kong's Cheng Nga Chin in five sets.

In the Qatar Classics in September, Wee Wern played as a wild card and gave world No. 20 Nada Abbas of Egypt a scare before going down 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5.

Wee Wern, who won 12 PSA titles in her career, said she is thrilled to make a huge improvement in her world ranking in just 10 months.

"Taking Nada Abbas to four sets and playing with her for 39 minutes shows that I can still give higher-ranked players a run for their money.

"It is good to be ranked 61st in the world and I will decide by the end of this year whether to continue playing in PSA tournaments next year or retire.

"It will all depend on my body. I have had a lot of injury battles in my career since 2015.

"I have also started doing coaching on and off in Singapore this year. And I have been invited to do coaching in Shanghai in December," said Wee Wern, who will feature in the Malaysia Cup in Seremban from Nov 6-10.

Wee Wern is seeded joint ninth and will face Menna Hamed of Egypt in the first round.
