Iconic Cobra 10s set for 50th edition this weekend

PETALING JAYA: After a three-year break due to Covid-19, the Cobra 10s rugby competition is set to return for its 50th edition from Nov 11 to 12.

The tournament will go back to its roots in Padang Astaka, where it was first held in 1967.

The competition's lasting power is commendable as many tournaments have fallen off the radar after a few editions due to various factors.

Former Cobra club president Tan Sri Krishnan Tan said the tournament's longevity was a testament to the passion and dedication of club members, as well as support from sponsors.

Krishnan, a well-respected corporate figure, has played a key role in securing funding for the tournament for more than a decade.

"Rugby is a fantastic game which helps build character and teamwork. Cobra have been actively involved in the development of this sport over the years despite the general decline of sports in our country, I'm sorry to say," said Krishnan at a press conference today.

"We are a small membership club made up of volunteers, but we are able to continue thanks to the sponsors who believe in us.

"We run a tight ship and all the money is used for what it is supposed to be used for.

"We believe that this is a great sport and that keeps us going. Even if I am not here anymore, I am sure this tournament will go on for many, many more years and this club will still be here."

This year's competition will feature a smaller field of nine teams in the men's competition. For the first time, it will include a women's category, featuring five teams.

The tournament is supported by the Youth and Sports Ministry, IJM Corporation Bhd, Sideline, Peri Formworks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Newfields Group, West Coast Expressway and Malaysia Airlines.

Men's teams: Cobra, Casuarina Cougars (Australia), Daveta Rugby (Fiji), Global Lions (New Zealand), Pakuranga United Rugby Club (New Zealand), Palmerston North Boys High School (New Zealand), NTK (South Africa), West Coast Sharks (South Africa) and Port Moresby Harlequins (Papua New Guinea).

Women's teams: Cobra Venom, Dingoes RC, Sabah Angel Warriors and Wolves RFC (Singapore).
